Dead Rio Claro 6.9.2011
Age: 62
On the 6th September 2011 the whole Brazilian Stigmatine Province of Santa Cruz remained astonished, because of the sudden death of Fr. José Carlos Stival. On the previous evening he had arrived from Curitiba to the Provincial House at Rio Claro, since he had an appointment with the Provincial Superior. He said he was tired and needed rest. The following morning he did not show up and the Provincial Superior entered his room and found that he had passed away because of a heart attack (as the later medical report revealed).
Fr. Stival was born at Bauru (SP – Brazil) on the 20th December 1948, son of Antonio and Maria. He entered the Congregation on the 30th January 1961 at Rio Claro, was a postulant in 1968 at Casa Branca and did his novitiate at Campinas in 1969, choosing to be a religious brother. At the end of the novitiate he left the Congregation and continued his studies of philosophy and history.
In 1978 he returned expressing the desire of becoming a priest. He professed his first vows on the 5th March 1978 and the final vows on the 23rd January 1981, both at Campinas. He was ordained a priest at Americana (SP) on the 23rd January 1982.
He exercised his priestly ministry in different communities: Itararé (SP - 1982/1988-1989); Santo Antônio do Sudoeste (PR - 1983-1987/1989-1990); Casa Branca (SP - 1991- until February 1994). From March 1994 to 1996 he was absent from the religious house and, when he returned, he lived and worked at Guarapuava (PR - 1996-1997), Campinas (SP - 1997-2009) and finally Curitiba (PA - 2010-2011). He worked as a Formator, Parish Priest and Assistant Parish Priest.
He had the special charisma of creating friendship among people, a great organizational skill, an amazing easiness and competency in preaching and a lively and joyful relationship with the Confreres in community life. A short look at his life reveals also his restlessness in always searching for something new or different.
He died at the age of 62. He was buried with the other Stigmatine Confreres at Campinas.
